December 2008

While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:6-7

How quickly we have moved into the Advent Season this year. Every year I think I will be ready for it, but it always catches me by surprise. This is probably the busiest month we have at Our Lady of Perpetual Help as we prepare for the coming of the Lord spiritually and for the end of the first semester academically. But, somehow we always manage to integrate the two successfully.

We will begin the new month this year welcoming a new priest to our parish and school community. Father Alex Waraksa is not new to OLPH; therefore, it will be welcoming him home more than just welcoming him to a new place. Several of us have worked with him before (I did at St. Jude), and although we will miss Father Manuel, we are looking forward to having Father Alex here. We are planning a meet and greet reception for him. Our preliminary plans are on December 12th after the all school mass. Dr. Morgan, our superintendent, will also be here on that day, and this is a way for our students and parents to meet both. We will send out an email to confirm or change the date.

Our book fair will be the first of this month. Drop in and do some Christmas shopping. Speaking of Christmas shopping, don’t forget the Scrip program we have going on. If you want to give a gift card to someone, buy it from the Home and School; you will be giving two gifts for the price of one.

Speaking of Home and School, they are very busy this month. First of all, they are sponsoring the Catholic Charities Christmas project this year for five needy families. We will have 3 “Giving Trees” on campus: one in the main building, one in the library, and one in the Holy Family Hall. This project was introduced at Home and School’s November 19th meeting. More information will be sent out on how you and your children may get involved to help these families. Thank you in advance for your help and charity.

On December 5th, Home and School will host “An Evening with Santa”. Traditionally, this has been a “Breakfast with Santa”, but this year they are trying something different. This is also the First Friday of the month and there will be an evening mass followed by the Fish Fry of the Knights of Columbus. Therefore, this should be a wonderful evening for the entire parish. Plan to join us if you can.

Also, on December 5th, Mrs. Dee Grant will lead the bell chime choir at mass for the last time. She has graciously given her time and talents to our students for many years. She will be missed, and we wish her well. She has been looking for someone to take over this choir, but has been unsuccessful. If you or anyone you know is interested, contact me. This has been a wonderful enrichment for our children, and we would like to continue it.

With the end of the year comes the end of the second nine weeks and the first semester. The middle school students will be taking exams before Christmas break. The teachers should be sending out their exam schedules shortly.

With everything else that is going on, the children are working on the Christmas Program. This program will be taking place December 18, 7:00 P.M. at Notre Dame High School. It will be approximately an hour long, and it always is a wonderful treat and way to end the year. Please make sure you have this date on your calendar.

The last day of school before the holidays is December 19, and we will resume January 7. Have a wonderful and blessed holiday and break.
God bless,
Jeri McInturff

November 2008

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him,and bless his name. For the Lord is good..."Psalm 100:4, 5a

Dear Parents/Guardians,

October was a very busy, but productive month. I don’t see November slowing down. This is the month of Thanksgiving, and we have so many blessings at OLPH to be thankful for. The first thing I want to do is to thank you for all of your support and caring that makes OLPH the great school it is. We are not perfect, but we are working on it. So many good things are happening here, but without our wonderful families, much of it could not go on:

• Thank you for helping to make Oktoberfest and the Ram Run such a great success.
• Thank you for helping with the Outback Bowl which was a huge success this year.
• Thank you for your wonderful attendance at the Home and School meetings.
• Thank you for your contributions to our Input Sessions that have been going on.
• Thank you for all of your volunteering to help our teachers and our students to be successful.
• Thank you to Richard Smith and others who have helped update our school website.
• Thank you for your patience, understanding, and perseverance when there are concerns and/or misunderstandings and for helping us to address them.
• Most of all, thank you for trusting us with your wonderful children.

The month of November is beginning with a mock election on November 3rd that is being initiated by the 5th grade and the Enrichment Group. All students will be voting in this national student election in our computer lab.

November 3rd is also the date of the Creative Arts Guild meeting. They are meeting at Chef Lin’s restaurant at 6:00. This organization does a great deal for our arts department. We are very proud of our arts program, but we could not afford to do all the things that we do if it weren’t for the support of CAG. They would love to have you join them for their meetings.

Also, to begin this month, we welcome a revisit from Jim Williams. If you have attended any of his presentations, you know how dynamic he is and how significant his message is. If you have not heard him, you are in for a great experience. We have had many requests to bring him back, and he will be here Wednesday evening, November 5th, at 6:30 P.M. Please plan to join us as he addresses the topic of “Strengthening Families”. There will be child care provided, and Home and School will be serving dessert and coffee. On Thursday, November 6th, Mr. Williams will be working with our sixth and seventh grades on the topic of bullying. This is the third year he has worked with our students, and his powerful presentations always produce positive results.

Another event that will be going on the first of the month is our celebration of the saints. Since we were not in school for All Saints Day, our primary students will be doing the traditional celebration of dressing up as saints on November 7th, which is also First Friday. Last month we started a coffee & donut reception after First Friday Mass for any adult who wished to attend. This month we will be doing it again, and our student “Saints” will be there to greet you and tell you something about themselves. So, come to First Friday Mass, join us for donuts and coffee, and meet our “Saints”.

If you have an eighth grader going to Notre Dame High School this year, the first testing date is November 8. Vouchers were given out at Home & School to offset the cost of this test if the student takes it on this date. Notre Dame would really appreciate as many students as possible to take the test early so they can get all the paperwork and planning completed in a timely fashion. Please call Brantley Crowder at 624-4618 today to register.

Meanwhile, during the month of November, we are in soccer season. During football season, we had a cookout at a home game for any one who attended the game. This was a wonderful afternoon and provided a great venue for a community gathering and socializing. The positive feedback was so overwhelming that we have decided to do this during a soccer game also. This will take place on November 13; so, plan to join us for a soccer game, free food, and a great time.

Speaking of Soccer, our next Booster Club meeting is November 10th. This organization works very hard to help our sports teams with supplies and other needs. Fortunately, many people join this organization at registration; unfortunately, not many people go to meetings or volunteer time. They would love your presence, help, and ideas. I encourage you to join them.
There is a Virtus Training on November 17th. Diocesan policy states that all adults who want to work with our children or chaperone on field trips must go through this training. Please register on line at http://www.virtus.org/ if you want this training.

Our next Home & School Meeting is November 19th. These meetings are always very informative and well worth attending. There is child care provided, and the Home & School Board keep the meetings orderly and within the time limits. Please try to attend.

On November 20th we are having an Open House for Kindergarten. If you know of anyone who is interested in finding a kindergarten for their child/children, please let us know so we can invite them. At this Open House, the parents will be able to see the kindergarten in action and will have the opportunity to talk with parents, teachers, and me about the program.
November 21st is the theme mass for third grade. They have been the lead grade on this month’s virtues of gratitude and generosity. Please join us for this mass and the all school mass on November 25th. Our Thanksgiving Holidays start November 26th. We will return on December 1st, and our annual December Book Fair will be going on.

This has been a synopsis of the month of November; however, there will be other events coming up that are not included in this letter. Please make sure you keep up with all the news by checking the Fanfare that can be found on our website.

As I close this letter for November, I again want you to know how thankful I am to be part of this wonderful Our Lady of Perpetual Help Family; I am truly blessed. I hope you all have a wonderful and blessed holiday.

Sincerely,
Jeri McInturff

October 2008

…It (Catholic education in U.S.) is an outstanding apostolate of hope, seeking to address the material, intellectual and spiritual needs of over three million children and students. Pope Benedict XVI, April 17, 2008

Dear Parents/Guardians,

As I reflect over the past month, I am amazed with how fast time has gone. More importantly, I am so pleased with how well every thing is going. Our students have been incredible, our teachers have been so productive, and our parents have been so involved. I am so fortunate to be a part of Our Lady of Perpetual Help School.

The month of October is always a very busy month, and this year is no exception. There are several events going on this year that are new to OLPH. One of the most important is the Strategic Planning Input Sessions. They begin this month, and I encourage everyone to participate. These sessions are to help us grow and become the best school we can become. We need your thoughts, ideas, support, and prayers.

As the new quarter begins, there will be new sporting activities among other events and activities that will not be covered in this letter or that may change after the publishing of this letter. I encourage all to read the weekly Fanfare that is published on our website. Speaking of our website, you will notice there are changes being made to keep you updated and aware. I have added a parents’ corner where I will be scanning parent articles periodically. There will be other additions and changes going on throughout the year. Thank you very much to Mr. Richard Smith and others who have helped Teresa Hale with this.

Last year we had to make some changes in our afternoon pickup process to accommodate the building of Holy Family Hall. The feedback from you, as well as from our teachers, was that this was a much safer and efficient process; so, we kept the procedure this year. We are asking for your help. Some parents are in a hurry and park their cars in the school lot, pick up their children from the line or gym, and proceed through the archway. This is causing some safety concerns, especially with our crossing guard. Only the kindergarten parents should be driving through the archway. The other cars should follow the traffic pattern in back of the gym. The crossing guard cannot control two heavy lanes of traffic; she is being put in danger. In addition, I am still witnessing parents letting students walk through the traffic by themselves both in the mornings and afternoons. Please drive or walk them to the ramp in the mornings, and do not expect them to walk to your cars in the lot in the afternoons. Our number one priority is the safety of your children.

The following is what is going on this busy month:

  • Saturday, October 4th, is the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Therefore, as an opener to our October calendar, we will have the Blessing of the Animals (Oct. 1) at 1:45 on the football field.
  • As part of the 40 Days of Life vigil, our students will be participating in the rosary October 2nd in front of church at the statue of Mary.
  • Friday, October 3, the students will have a day off as the faculty travels to Knoxville for a Diocesan in-service.
  • Booster Club Meeting, October 6, 6:00 in the cafeteria.
  • The fire department will be here for the Kg-4th grades on Tuesday, October 7.
  • Wednesday, October 8, is our second annual Irish Bowl. This is a football game between OLPH and St. Jude at Notre Dame High School. This year, the Bowl falls during Notre Dame’s homecoming week. Therefore, the seventh and eighth grade students have been invited to join them all morning for their field day before the game. The sixth graders will be going to the game only. We want to thank Notre Dame for inviting us and providing transportation for our students to the high school. Families of the 6th,7th, and 8th graders will be getting more details sent home to them.
  • Thursday, October 9, we are hosting our first Book Frenzy. This wonderful idea brought to us by some of the parents is a school wide book exchange. This initiative is not only parent oriented but parent organized as well as parent supervised. Thank you to Mrs. Raabe, Mrs. McGhee, and all the parents involved.
  • Friday, October 10, we end our week with the Living Rosary which will be held in the gym at 2:45. We invite all of you to join us.
  • October 13th through 17th is Fall Break. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!
  • The eighth graders come back from Fall Break to go on retreat at Wesley Woods October 20th-22nd. Then on the 23rd they have their visitation day at Notre Dame.
  • The Home and School Meeting is on the 22nd. Your Home and School Board is working very hard this year, and the meetings are very productive and informative. I encourage everyone to come and become involved.
  • Awards will be given to the 5th through 8th graders in the gym on Friday, Oct. 24th in the gym.
  • October 24 is the beginning date of our Spanish Enrichment Program. This is another one of our wonderful parent initiatives. It is open to all students from 4th through 8th grade. Students will be bringing home information on this; it will be posted in the Fanfare; or, you may call the school about it. Thank you to Mrs. Riesco, Mrs. Rivas, and the other parents involved in this.
  • Our Oktoberfest Ram Run is October 25. We need your help and support.
  • Following the Ram Run the Oktoberfest will be held in the Tennessee Pavilion and will continue through Sunday. OLPH will be manning the food booth.
  • Also, on October 25, after the Ram Run, our football team will be playing the Outback Bowl and celebrating its 60th year of football. Go Rams!
  • The school committee meeting is Monday, October 27th , in the school library.
  • Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for October 31st. Last year we tried something different and received a lot of wonderful feedback. Therefore, we are going to do this again. We will have conferences beginning on Thursday evening and the remainder on Friday morning. This way working parents will be able to meet without taking off from their jobs. We want EVERYONE to attend the conferences. More information will go home about this.

I want to close this newsletter by again thanking you for all of your support. We are having a wonderful year, but we could not be successful in our mission without you. If you have not been on the campus yet this school year, I invite you to come. I think you will walk away saying, “Wow!”

Have a great month.

God Bless,

Jeri McInturff
